Although liquid ammonia has a higher specific heat than water32 at temperatures well below zero, and liquid sodium (at 882°C) and mercury (at 660°C) exhibit higher latent heats of vaporization than water,33 no other liquid is known that can approach even remotely the fitness of water for heat elimination and temperature regulation in large, meta-bolically active, terrestrial, warm-blooded forms of life in the ambient temperature range. This is significant because 0°C to 100°C is both the approximate temperature range of life on Earth34 and the range in which organic compounds can be most readily manipulated by biochemical systems (see next chapter).
